As the Executive Director Operations, you will be responsible for leading a complex, high-performing division that encompasses business planning, train services, network services, customer operations, customer experience, network security, business resilience, and operations transformation. Your leadership will be instrumental in embedding V/Line’s core value of “Think Customer”, fostering a culture of collaboration, and driving operational excellence.
This role requires strong strategic leadership to translate V/Line’s organisational strategy into meaningful long-term plans, ensuring continuous improvement and operational effectiveness. A core responsibility is maintaining a safe and compliant workplace by proactively identifying and managing risks to protect staff, customers, and visitors. The role also champions service excellence by embedding a customer-first mindset and leveraging data insights to enhance the passenger journey. Additionally, it involves stakeholder engagement, requiring the ability to build and sustain productive relationships with government bodies, transport agencies, and industry partners to drive collaboration and alignment.
Operational excellence is a key focus, with responsibilities including overseeing service delivery aspects such as timetabling, scheduling, rostering, and incident management to ensure seamless operations. People leadership is central to this role, as it involves inspiring, mentoring, and empowering a diverse workforce while fostering a culture of high performance, accountability, and inclusivity. Furthermore, the role leads large-scale organisational change and transformation initiatives, enhancing business resilience, agility, and innovation across the network.
To be considered for this role, you will be a highly regarded executive leader with experience leading a complex operations portfolio ideally across a combination of commercial and public sector environments. Transport experience will be advantageous but not essential. You will have demonstrated experience in problem solving, outstanding commercial acumen with a view to drive optimal operations performance. Importantly your inclusive leadership and ability to work in collaboration with the senior leadership team to achieve a whole of organisation vision will be at the forefront. Effective engagement and credibility in senior level dealings will be imperative to your success. Importantly, you are comfortable leading cross-functional teams through significant change and can effectively bring all stakeholders along on the journey.
