Davidson is working with a state government department who are seeking an experienced Policy & Legislation Officer.
About the Role
As the Principal Policy and Legislation Officer, you will combine your practical legal or legislation development experience with your passion for public and social policy to provide authoritative advice and deliver practical policies, strategies, initiatives, and legislative solutions that enable the achievement of the departments vision.
You will be a trusted advisor to the Director Strategy and Planning, Executive Director Strategy and Governance and Chief Executive Officer on legislation reforms, strategic policy matters, emerging issues and key risks relevant to the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Assessing legislative and policy impacts on current and emerging issues, including impacts related to implementing recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission, to identify key risks, issues and benefits, and develop evidence-based options, policies and strategies for consideration by executive leaders.
- Planning and leading legislative and policy projects, including developing Cabinet submissions and preparing legislation products such as drafting instructions for bills or regulations, explanatory notes, regulatory impact statements and other Cabinet/ Parliamentary supporting documentation.
- Coordinating and preparing well researched and thorough briefs, discussion papers, presentations, submissions, correspondence, answers to parliamentary Questions on Notice, and contributions on policy development of other agencies and jurisdictions, including liaising with other organisation units as required to capture whole-of-the department positions.
- Building strong partnerships, negotiating and working collaboratively with policy and legal staff across the department, the Department of Justice and Attorney-General and other Queensland Government departments, as well as representatives from professional bodies, community groups and other jurisdictions, to explore diverse viewpoints and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Scanning the environment to maintain awareness of latest national and international developments related to the guardianship sector and other matters that may impact the department and its customers, and providing reports, presentations, briefs and advice to the Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director, Director and senior executives.
- Representing the department in inter-departmental and inter-agency meetings and working groups.
About you
- Experience in, or demonstrably transferable skills and experience for, leading a complex policy and legislative agenda and an understanding of the legislative, government and Cabinet processes.
- Demonstrated high-level ability to understand key issues and emerging trends in social policy and their implications for the Queensland Government and the community.
- Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills and the ability to lead, collaborate, or work independently in a team environment
- Proven ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships including the ability to influence change towards mutually beneficial outcomes and establish partnerships to support outcomes.
- While not mandatory, an undergraduate or higher degree qualification in law, public administration, social policy or related areas would be well regarded.
- Experience working within Queensland Government is highly regarded.

- $94.34 to $99.71per hour + Super (Agency Contractor – PAYG)
